National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

WHEREAS, early on the morning of December 7, 1941, the United States Navy Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked without warning by the Japanese Imperial Navy, provoking the entry of the United States into World War II; and

WHEREAS, 2,403 American military personnel, including a number of Virginians, were killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor, and 1,178 were wounded; and

WHEREAS, thousands of young men and women entered the United States Armed Forces after the attack on Pearl Harbor to protect their homeland and families, and our nation suffered the great loss of more than 400,000 American lives, including 8,777 Virginians, in World War II; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of the Commonwealth are forever indebted to those who died at Pearl Harbor and those who fought with valor and bravery during the World War that followed while defending the people and principles of our great nation; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting to observe a day in honor of everyone who served in the United States Armed Forces at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and reflect on their sacrifices and those of their families and loved ones; and,

WHEREAS, the United States Congress, by Public Law 103-308, as amended, has designated December 7 of each year as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize December 7, 2023, as NATIONAL PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
