WHEREAS, economics is a social science that studies the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services; and
WHEREAS, the aim of economic education is to equip students with the proper knowledge for their economic roles as productive workers, informed consumers and savers, involved citizens, and lifelong decision-makers in an increasingly global economy; and
WHEREAS, the active support and involvement of economically literate citizens who can evaluate critical issues of public policy is essential to the long-term health of our nation’s economy and government; and
WHEREAS, economic education starts and thrives in our K-12 schools, where even young children are learning basic economic concepts that help them understand the world around them; and
WHEREAS, educators, public institutions, and private sector organizations across the Commonwealth are dedicated to ensuring that Virginia’s students become economically literate with the ability to understand how our economy works and the need for them to invest in their own human capital to achieve their ambitions; and
WHEREAS, economic education equips students with the knowledge needed to become successful entrepreneurs, productive workers, prudent consumers and investors, and informed citizens; and
WHEREAS, it is important to encourage all Virginians to promote economic education, encourage entrepreneurship, and recognize the educational resources available to students;
