WHEREAS, celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, the Library of Virginia is the Commonwealth’s oldest institution dedicated to the preservation of Virginia’s history and culture; and 

WHEREAS, Dr. Sandra Gioia Treadway has served as the Commonwealth’s ninth Librarian of Virginia and has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to innovation and exemplary leadership; and 

WHEREAS, Dr. Treadway joined the Library of Virginia in 1978 as an associate editor of publications and proceeded to serve in various critical roles before being named the State Librarian; and 

WHEREAS, Dr. Treadway dedicated 45 years to building an enduring legacy and propelling the Library of Virginia’s work forward to serve new audiences across the Commonwealth; and 

WHEREAS, as a published author and renowned historian, respect and admiration for Dr. Treadway’s knowledge and ability to inspire spans the Commonwealth and the nation; and  

WHEREAS, Dr. Treadway has cultivated an understanding and appreciation of the history, culture, and government of Virginia through the collections and outreach of the Library of Virginia; and 

WHEREAS, Dr. Treadway successfully increased accessibility to the Library’s holdings through creative programs, exhibitions, and digital projects while also strengthening relationships within state government and the wider library and cultural community; and 

WHEREAS, Dr. Treadway ushered the Library of Virginia into the digital age, realizing significant growth in the digitization and accessibility of its records, opening new windows to the past for diverse audiences through special projects like Virginia Untold: The African American Narrative and Making History with LVA, a volunteer transcription program; and 

WHEREAS, as an invaluable advocate, a tireless ambassador, and the Commonwealth’s Librarian of Virginia, Dr. Treadway has demonstrated outstanding service to the Commonwealth of Virginia and leaves an indelible mark on literary arts in Virginia and the nation; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize December 15, 2023, as DR. SANDRA GIOIA TREADWAY DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
