WHEREAS, the study of the history and evolution of political theory, government systems, and political processes is a vital part of citizenship and ensures that students understand the importance of engaging in civic duties; and

WHEREAS, civics awareness in Virginia instills in students the knowledge that this nation was founded on individual freedom and the principles of limited government; and

WHEREAS, it is important to embolden all Virginians with an understanding of the value of freedom, good governance, and patriotism to maintain the health of our system of government and the liberty it preserves; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is committed to educating students on the key points of United States history and civics in order that future generations may continue to make the Commonwealth the best place to live, work, and raise a family; and

WHEREAS, during Civics Awareness Month, Virginia students, educators, parents and guardians are encouraged to fully engage in the knowledge of our government and its capabilities in order to uphold President Abraham Lincoln’s charge that “government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth”;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize October 2023, as CIVICS AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of our citizens.
