Virginia Homeownership Month 2016

WHEREAS, homeownership strengthens families, stabilizes neighborhoods, builds healthy communities and promotes economic opportunity; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s realtors, lenders, and homebuilders, along with local governments and non-profits, are vital partners in fostering homeownership in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Housing Development Authority, in partnership with the Department of Housing and Community Development, has been a leader in assisting Virginians to attain sustainable homeownership through such programs as the Down Payment Assistance Program, the Mortgage Credit Certificate Program, and the Virginia Individual Development Accounts Program;

WHEREAS, these programs contribute to Virginia’s high homeownership rate, which at over 67.1 percent in 2015 is higher than the national average, and

WHEREAS, Virginia promotes financial literacy and provides free homeownership education and counseling – including online at www.vhda.com – to assist home buyers in understanding the costs and obligations of any home purchase, and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s housing and community development partners are committed to increasing affordable housing and furthering homeownership opportunities for all Virginians, including first-time home buyers and underserved populations.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize June 2016 as VIRGINIA HOMEOWNERSHIP MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
