Virginia High School Voter Registration Week

WHEREAS, the right to vote is an important civil liberty that helps contribute to the health of the American political system as well as to the people who participate in it; and

WHEREAS, voter registration for high school students who are 18, or will turn 18 before an election, should be accessible and convenient for all students; and

WHEREAS, educators play an important role in the development of their students as productive, active citizens, and participation in the electoral process is one of the earliest introductions students can have to becoming involved citizens; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Secretaries of Administration and Education have worked with the Department of Elections and the Department of Education, as well as other interested parties, to conduct voter registration outreach to high school students across the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, April 23-29, 2017, will be the second-annual Virginia High School Student Registration Week, in which teachers and students will be encouraged to hold registration drives at their schools so that high school students throughout the Commonwealth who are qualified to register will have the opportunity to do so; and

WHEREAS, nearly 2,500 qualified 17-year-olds registered to vote during the first-annual Virginia High School Student Voter Registration Week, and 52,806 18-year-olds voted in the 2016 Presidential Election; and

WHEREAS, Virginians can apply to register to vote at the Department of Motor Vehicles, a voter registration drive, their local general registrar’s office, by filling out a paper application and mailing it to their local registration office, or by completing the online form on the Department of Elections’ website; and

WHEREAS, voting is a fundamental part of our democracy and ensures that everyone’s voice is heard;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize April 23-29, 2017, as VIRGINIA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT VOTER REGISTRATION WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
