Transgender Day of Remembrance


WHEREAS, the safety and well-being of all Virginians is important to the happiness and prosperity of our Commonwealth’s families and communities; and

WHEREAS, transgender people and communities experience disproportionate levels of hate-violence; and

WHEREAS, the highest level of fatal violence of transgender people was recorded in 2016; and

WHEREAS, one in two transgender individuals are sexually abused or assaulted at some point in their lives; and

WHEREAS, education and awareness is key to preventing further violence to and discrimination of the transgender community, and support programs are essential for victims; and

WHEREAS, November 20, is annually observed as Transgender Day of Remembrance, which recognizes the numerous transgender men and women whose lives were lost in acts of hate and anti-transgender violence;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize November 20, 2017, as TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
