Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists Week


WHEREAS, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are advanced practice nurses who have been essential to the United States healthcare system for the past 150 years; and

WHEREAS, CRNAs provide high-quality, cost-effective anesthesia care throughout the United States, safely administering more than 43 million anesthetics to patients each year; and

WHEREAS, in rural areas, CRNAs are the primary providers of anesthesia care, enabling healthcare facilities in these under-served regions to offer obstetrical, surgical, and trauma stabilization services; and

WHEREAS, CRNAs practice in every setting in which anesthesia is delivered, including traditional hospital surgical suites, obstetrical delivery rooms, ambulatory surgical centers, U.S. Military and Veterans Administration medical facilities, and the offices of dentists, podiatrists, ophthalmologists, and plastic surgeons; and

WHEREAS, nurses first provided anesthesia to wounded soldiers during the Civil War, and CRNAs have been the main providers of anesthesia care to U.S. military personnel on the front lines since World War I; and

WHEREAS, CRNA Week gives us the opportunity to thank the 1,951 CRNAs working in the Commonwealth who devote their lives to administering safe, quality, cost-effective anesthesia services to their patients;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize January 22-28, 2017, as CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETISTS WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
