50th Anniversary of the Virginia and Santa Catarina, Brazil, Partnership


WHEREAS, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy issued a call for bold, new initiatives of friendship and cooperation among the peoples of the Western Hemisphere, and the Alliance for Progress was born; and

WHEREAS, Partners of the Americas was established in 1964 as the people to-people component of the Alliance for Progress and is now one of the largest private voluntary organizations in the western Hemisphere engaged in international development and training; and

WHEREAS, presently, 60 partnerships link 45 U.S. states and the District of Columbia with 31 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, embarked upon a partnership in 1967 that began exchanges between the two states; and

WHEREAS,citizens on both sides of the partnership determine the local needs, and mobilize people and resources to get the job done; and

WHEREAS, over the past 50 years, the partnership has sponsored exchanges focusing on music, art, cuisine, medicine, dentistry, natural resource management, volunteerism, agriculture, tourism, economic development, social development, domestic and school violence prevention, and university linkages; and

WHEREAS, several Virginia Governors have served as Honorary Chairmen of Virginia Partners and have participated in projects and traveled to Santa Catarina and have graciously received many guests from Santa Catarina; and

WHEREAS, Partners of the Americas calls upon Governor McAuliffe to officially recognize the 50th Anniversary of Virginia/Santa Catarina Partnership;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize the 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE VIRGINIA AND SANTA CATARINA, BRAZIL,  PARTNERSHIP in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
