2017 World Trade Month


WHEREAS, in 2015, Virginia exports totaled $35.2 billion, consisting of $17.8 billion in services exports and $17.4 billion in products exports, reaching an all-time high for service exports which represent more than half of Virginia’s overall exports; and

WHEREAS, from 2009 to 2014, nearly 30 percent of Virginia’s economic growth was driven by exports, which create nearly 321,000 jobs in the Commonwealth and generate $18.7 billion in labor income and $2 billion in tax revenue annually; and

WHEREAS, Virginia ranks 16th in the U.S. for exports of agricultural and forestry commodities, valued at more than $3.35 billion and supporting more than 34,100 jobs; and

WHEREAS, the Port of Virginia in 2016 has created more than 3,800 jobs, 3.5 million square feet of warehouse space, and invested more than $924 million, now making it the highest rail-volume port on the East Coast of the United States, in addition to the second largest port for agricultural exports on the East Coast; and

WHEREAS, more than 374,000 jobs are linked to the Port’s activity throughout the state; and

WHEREAS, the Port of Virginia has direct access to more than 43 countries with 33 shipline services and 20 shiplines offering direct calls to more than 80 ports; and

WHEREAS, last year, the Capital Region USA region welcomed 2.6 million visitors from overseas with an estimated $2 billion in direct spending; and

WHEREAS, Virginia embraces international trade for the benefits it provides all of our citizens;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize May 2017 as WORLD TRADE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
