2017 Virginia Dairy Month


WHEREAS,milk is the third highest selling agricultural product in Virginia, with $317 million in cash receipts in 2015; and

WHEREAS, in 2015, there were 608 licensed Grade A dairy farms, and seven commercial milk processing plants in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s top dairy-producing counties in 2015 were Rockingham  – 543.2 million pounds, Franklin  – 194.5 million pounds, Pittsylvania  –­­ 160.5 million pounds, Augusta – 144.1 million pounds, Fauquier  – 47.2 million pounds, and Washington – 46.2 million pounds; and

WHEREAS,milk has been the official beverage of the Commonwealth since 1982; and

WHEREAS, a cup of milk has 8.4 grams of protein, and provides 50 percent of the recommended daily allowance of calcium and 23 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize June 2017, as VIRGINIA DAIRY MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
