2017 Virginia 4-H Week

WHEREAS, since 1902, America’s 4-H program has served the youth of our nation, emphasizing the importance of head, heart, hands, and health; and

WHEREAS, in 1914, the passage of the Smith-Lever Act created the Cooperative Extension System and nationalized 4-H; and

WHEREAS, the Cooperative Extension System created a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing in hands-on projects in areas of health, science, agriculture, and citizenship; and

WHEREAS,Virginia’s 4-H program has grown to serve more than 240,000 youth members across the Commonwealth, helping young Virginians to become confident, independent, resilient, and compassionate leaders; and

WHEREAS, Virginia 4-H participants, ages 5 to 19, take part in activities through school and community-based clubs, as well as camp settings, in which they pledge to build a better community, country, and world; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia 4-H program strengthens Virginia’s rural, suburban, and urban communities by recognizing and developing the power and promise of America’s youth, and by creating innovative partnerships among local residents, volunteers, private supporters, universities, and local, state, and federal government; and

WHEREAS, the 4-H motto, “learn by doing,” encourages young people to take advantage of educational opportunities that allow them to explore and understand the importance of science, conservation, economics, and leadership; and

WHEREAS, the 4-H pledge “Head, Heart, Hands, and Health,” exemplifies a commitment to learning and hard work, fosters dedication to community service, and inspires our youth to be tomorrow’s successful leaders; and

WHEREAS, Virginia 4-H Week recognizes the many volunteers and young people throughout our Commonwealth who donate their time, talents, and energy to local 4-H programs;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 1-7, 2017, as VIRGINIA 4-H WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
