2017 Summer Food Service Program Day


WHEREAS, summer is a difficult time for children who depend on school meals as their primary source of nutrition during the school year; and

WHEREAS, 87% of Virginia students who rely on these meals do not participate in the Summer Food Service Program; and

WHEREAS, through partnership and collaboration, the Commonwealth of Virginia has made tremendous strides in improving access to nutritious meals for children during the summer; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Health administers the United States Department of Agriculture Summer Food Service Program, which ensures that children continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer at community centers, libraries, schools, and faith-based organizations; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Education plays a significant role in helping schools provide meals to children in need during the summer; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s locally elected leaders and municipal agencies are key partners in the fight against summer hunger;and

WHEREAS, it is critical to raise public awareness of child hunger and nutrition, the necessity of the Summer Food Service Program, and the importance of increased access to meal sites in communities throughout Virginia;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize June 19, 2017, as the second annual SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
