2017 Salute to Valor Days


WHEREAS, the men and women of the Commonwealth of Virginia have performed deeds of valor in all of our nation’s wars as members of the Armed Forces of the United States of America; and 

WHEREAS, members of public safety and law enforcement organizations of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States, including fire, police, and emergency services, have performed deeds of valor to ensure the health, safety, security, and well-being of citizens of the Commonwealth; and

WHEEREAS, the Legion of Valor of the United States of America was founded in Washington, D.C., on April 23, 1890, by a group of Civil War and Indian War recipients of the Medal of Honor; and

WHEREAS, the organization was chartered by an act of Congress in 1955 and reaffirmed in 1961; and

WHEREAS, Legion of Valor members have distinguished themselves through their extraordinary acts of selfless heroism, and many have received accolades including the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross for U.S. Army, the Navy Cross for U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps, and the Air Force Cross for U.S. Air Force; and

WHEREAS, the Legion of Valor also recognizes members who have helped save a life by presenting them with the Silver Cross for Heroism; and

WHEREAS, the Legion of Valor will hold its annual convention in the City of Newport News, Virginia, from April 19-23, 2017;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize April 19-23, 2017, as SALUTE TO VALOR DAYS in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
