2017 Patient and Family Experience Week

WHEREAS, the health and safety of all Virginians is essential to the happiness and well-being of the Commonwealth’s families and communities; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association (VHHA) is an alliance of 110 hospitals and 29 health delivery systems that develops and advocates for sound healthcare policy in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, in 2015, the VHHA established the Center for Healthcare Excellence, which oversees healthcare quality and patient safety initiatives in support of its member hospitals and health systems throughout the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, in September 2017, the VHHA launched two resources that will support their members’ work to enhance the patient and family experience: the Virginia Hospital Patient and Family Experience Guide and the Virginia Patient Experience Dashboard; and

WHEREAS, in the latest annual National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report released by the United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Virginia ranks ninth nationwide in healthcare quality; and

WHEREAS, in the spring of 2017, two nationally recognized healthcare quality organizations recognized dozens of hospitals across the Commonwealth for their tremendous patient safety performance; and

WHEREAS, 35 Virginia hospitals earned “A” grades in the Hospital Safety Grade scores from the Leapfrog Group, and 21 Virginia hospitals received the “Patient Safety Excellence Award” from Healthgrades; and

WHEREAS, Patient and Family Experience Week serves as an opportunity for citizens to recognize the improvements Virginia’s hospitals and health systems have made and the attention these organizations place on patient and family experiences; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 30 – November 3, 2017, as PATIENT AND FAMILY EXPERIENCE WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
