2017 National Engineers Day

WHEREAS, Virginia is committed to training individuals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs and degrees; and

WHEREAS, engineers are professional practitioners within the STEM field who use scientific knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to solve technical, societal, and commercial problems; and

WHEREAS, in a 21st century economy, engineers face many challenges when developing sustainable structures and systems; and 

WHEREAS, the Peninsula Engineers Council (PEC) is an inter-society council in Virginia dedicated to strengthening and promoting the engineering profession in the Peninsula area; and

WHEREAS, the PEC was founded in 1970 by Douglas Ensor of the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers to bring the larger engineering community of the Peninsula into the recognition of National Engineers Week; and

WHEREAS, the PEC seeks to bring to the attention of the public and engineering community the contributions of engineers in the Peninsula area by selecting, recognizing, and awarding Peninsula Engineer of the Year and the Doug Ensor Award; and

WHEREAS, the purpose of the PEC is to coordinate efforts in furthering engineering education and to increase the interest in the engineering profession;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize February 26, 2017, as NATIONAL ENGINEERS DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
