2017 Manufacturing Appreciation Week


WHEREAS, Virginia’s vibrant and globally competitive manufacturing sector contributes to a stronger economy in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, manufacturing supports economic growth by creating jobs and adding value to raw materials through the application of worker’s skills and investment in technology, tools, and energy; and

WHEREAS, manufacturing is a high wage sector of Virginia’s economy, with an average annual compensation of more than $57,000 in 2016; and

WHEREAS, in 2016, manufacturing produced $113 billion in annual economic output, and employed more than 242,000 Virginians; and

WHEREAS, manufactured goods exported accounted for $16.4 billion annually in 2016; and

WHEREAS, small businesses comprised 86 percent of all exporters in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Manufacturing Appreciation Week is an opportunity to encourage the growth and prosperity of manufacturing, and raise public awareness of its importance to Virginia’s economy;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 1-7, 2017, as MANUFACTURING APPRECIATION WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
