2017 Lights On Afterschool Day

WHEREAS, the health and safety of all Virginia’s children are important to the happiness, prosperity and well-being of our Commonwealth's families and communities; and

WHEREAS, building stronger communities starts with promoting the welfare of our children, and requires students, parents, business and community leaders, and volunteers to work together; and

WHEREAS, citizens of the Commonwealth are firmly committed to quality afterschool programs and opportunities; and

WHEREAS,afterschool programs support working families by ensuring that their children are safe and productive after the regular school day ends; and

WHEREAS, stronger communities are built by involving students, parents, business leaders, and adult volunteers in the lives of children, thereby promoting positive relationships among youth, families, and adults; and

WHEREAS, over 190,000 Virginia children participate in afterschool programs; yet, more than 390,000 children are not enrolled in programs due to a lack of availability; and

WHEREAS, many afterschool programs across the country face funding problems; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth stands firmly committed to quality afterschool programs that provide safe, challenging, and engaging learning experiences that help children develop social, emotional, physical, and academic skills; and

WHEREAS, each year, the Afterschool Alliance, established in 2000 by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, J.C. Penney, the Open Society Institute/The After-School Corporation, the Entertainment Industry Foundation, and the Creative Artists Agency Foundation, organizes “Lights on Afterschool Day,” to promote the importance of quality afterschool programs; and

WHEREAS, on October 26, 2017, afterschool programs across the country celebrate the 18th Annual Lights on Afterschool Day with open houses, program tours, stadium rallies, and parades, celebrating the importance of quality afterschool programs;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 26, 2017, as LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
