2017 International Day of Yoga


WHEREAS, yoga is an ancient Indian tradition, which exemplifies the harmony between one and nature; and

WHEREAS, derived from Sanskrit, yoga means to join or unite; symbolizing the union of the mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; and

WHEREAS, on December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21st as the International Day of Yoga; and

WHEREAS, on June 17th, the Embassy of India and Friends of Yoga will celebrate the 3rd annual International Day of Yoga at the National Sylvan Theater on the National Mall in Washington D.C.; and

WHEREAS, this year’s theme is “Yoga for Health,” which recognizes that yoga is a holistic approach to health and well-being; and

WHEREAS, this event serves as an opportunity for Virginians to experience authentic Indian culture by participating in one of India’s most cherished traditions; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is proud to join citizens across the world in celebrating the International Day of Yoga;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize June 21, 2017, as the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
