2017 International Assistance Dog Week


WHEREAS, assistance dogs include: guide dogs – for the blind and visually impaired, hearing alert dogs - for the deaf and hearing impaired, and service dogs – for people with other disabilities; and

WHEREAS, assistance dogs serve as devoted companions, friends, and family members; and

WHEREAS, service dogsassist people with disabilities with walking, balance, dressing, moving from place to place; guide dogs assist people with vision loss; hearing alert dogs alert people with a hearing loss to the presence of specific sounds; seizure alert/seizure response dogs alert or respond to medical conditions, such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, epilepsy, panic attack, post-traumatic stress disorder and other medical events; and medical alert/medical response dogs alert or respond to oncoming medical conditions; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia recognizes August 6-12 as International Assistance Dog Week in an effort to raise awareness of the selfless way assistance dogs aid individuals with mitigating their disability-related limitations;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize August 6-12, 2017, as INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE DOG WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
