2017 Feed Virginia Day of Action

WHEREAS, many Virginians across the Commonwealth have difficulty accessing healthy, affordable, local food for their families; and

WHEREAS, one in seven Virginia children do not know where their next meal will come from; and

WHEREAS, food security is strongly linked to children’s health and academic success, and improving food access is a key tool in supporting improved education outcomes and the development of a 21st century workforce; and

WHEREAS, over the past three years with the leadership of First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe, the Commonwealth of Virginia has made great progress to decrease childhood hunger and increase food access in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the work of the Commonwealth’s Council on Bridging the Nutritional Divide has focused on eliminating child hunger, promoting access to healthy, local foods to support local agriculture, and facilitating local programs to promote food access and health; and

WHEREAS,First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe and the Council created an online resource, the Virginia Food Access Network, to bring the work of bridging the nutritional divide to every corner of the Commonwealth by sharing resources, data, and connections; and

WHEREAS, more than 370 organizations across the Commonwealth have joined the Virginia Food Access Network in the work of bringing people and food together to build stronger communities; and

WHEREAS, to promote community action against hunger, food banks, schools, farms, nonprofits, and other organizations from across the Commonwealth will mobilize hundreds of volunteers on September 29th in events designed to support food access and strengthen connections throughout the food system; and

WHEREAS, as Virginia’s food system continues to collaborate and innovate, our Commonwealth’s citizens become more engaged with both our food and our neighbors in need, leading to better lives for all Virginia families;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 29, 2017, as FEED VIRGINIA DAY OF ACTION in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
