2017 Family and Consumer Sciences Week


WHEREAS, family and consumer sciences, previously known as home economics, is an academic discipline that combines aspects of social and natural sciences in order to help people gain important life skills; and

WHEREAS, established in 1909 within the Industrial Arts Department of the Virginia Education Association, the Virginia Home Economics Association, today known as the Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (VAFCS), is an organization dedicated to the teachings of family and consumer sciences; and

WHEREAS, VAFCS empowers members to focus their expertise on critical issues, act on public concerns, and collaborate with partner organizations who share their purpose; and

WHEREAS, through family and consumer sciences education, VAFCS seeks to improve the quality of life of individuals and families in Virginia by teaching them how to make sound choices that result in healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives; and

WHEREAS, family and consumer sciences offer research-based, practical knowledge for everyday life, including education about health, housing, apparel, personal development, housing, nutrition, and management of resources and personal finances; and

WHEREAS, VAFCS is dedicated to helping families and individuals throughout the Commonwealth obtain the resources they need in order to make informed decisions about their health and well-being so they can achieve an optimal quality of life;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize February 12-18, 2017, as family and consumer sciences week in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
