100th Anniversary of Fort Lee


WHEREAS, for 100 years, Fort Lee has been an essential post for our United States Armed Forces, ensuring that members of the United States Army are well trained to provide the logistical support to fight and win our nation’s wars; and

WHEREAS, in June 1917, the United States began the construction of Camp Lee on land in Prince George County, Virginia, which served as a training base for more than 60,000 members of the United States Armed Forces preparing to fight during World War I; and

WHEREAS, in October 1940, due to the high tensions in Europe, and following Congressional approval to call up the National Guard and  Reserves, the War Department ordered the rebuilding of Camp Lee; and

WHEREAS,  in October 1941, the Quartermaster School was moved from Philadelphia to Camp Lee, where 300,000 Quartermaster Soldiers and 50,000 officers were trained during World War II in the art of military supply and service; and

WHEREAS, during the late 1940s and 1950s, Camp Lee became home to the Adjutant General School and the Women’s Army Corps, which established a premier training facility for women who wanted to serve their nation; and

WHEREAS, on April 15, 1950, the War Department established Camp Lee as a permanent facility, renaming it Fort Lee; and

WHEREAS,the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure legislation assigned the installation an important new mission of establishing a Sustainment Center of Excellence that would serve as a focused training base for military supply, services, maintenance, munitions and transportation; and

WHEREAS, Fort Lee has been a staple of the Central Virginia region, offering job opportunities to civilians, and serving as a home to thousands of military families and retired military members; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia joins Fort Lee in celebrating one hundred years of remarkable history and contributions to the defense of the United States;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize July 10, 2017, as the 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF FORT LEE in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
