Governor-elect Northam Statement on Governor McAuliffe’s Budget Presentation to the General Assembly Money Committees

RICHMOND — Governor-elect Ralph Northam released the following statement today following Governor Terry McAuliffe’s introduction of the FY 2018-2022 Biennial Budget:

“I want to thank Governor McAuliffe and his team for the time and effort they put into the budget plan that will guide the work of my administration and the General Assembly in the coming legislative session.

“The budget the Governor presented reflects the hard work we have all done over the past four years to grow Virginia’s economy and invest in priorities that make life better for all Virginians, no matter who they are or where they live. Among many other proposals, I agree with the Governor’s agenda to invest in education, workforce development, mental health services and our Commonwealth’s mass transit systems.

“I applaud the prudent investment this budget makes in a cash reserve to fortify our Commonwealth against future economic uncertainty or continued dysfunction in Washington.

“Finally, I remain fully committed to bringing our taxpayer dollars home to expand health care coverage to Virginians who need it. The Governor’s proposal will benefit nearly 400,000 people who need health care now, it will create tens of thousands of new jobs and it will save our budget more than $400 million. Virginians elected us all to put politics aside and do what is right – expanding Medicaid should be at the top of the list this session.”
