Governor McAuliffe Wins StateScoop State Executive of the Year Award

RICHMOND – Governor Terry McAuliffe last night accepted the 2017 StateScoop GoldenGov: State Executive of the Year Award for his outstanding leadership in growing Virginias IT sector. Each year, the StateScoop 50 Awards honor the best and brightest who make state government more efficient and effective. These awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of the leaders from the public and private sector who make the state government information technology community so unique.

“I want to thank StateScoop for recognizing the success we have achieved in making Virginia a national leader in cybersecurity and information technology,” said Governor McAuliffe. “This sector is essential in the 21st century economy. With 36,000 tech jobs open right now in the Commonwealth, we have a tremendous opportunity to expand our footprint in this industry and further develop our top-notch workforce. We’re well on our way to making Virginia the undisputed national leader in cybersecurity.”

Since taking office, Governor McAuliffe has made cybersecurity a key component of his plan to build a new Virginia economy. Under his leadership, Virginia has expanded cybersecurity apprenticeships in addition to creating partnerships to strengthen cybersecurity employment, educational opportunities, and scholarships around the Commonwealth. Last month, Virginia entered into a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services and the Virginia Cyber Range to make Virginia a national resource for cybersecurity education.

As Chairman of the National Governors Association, Governor McAuliffe has also made cyber security his top priority. His Chair’s initiative, Meet the Threat: States Confront the Cyber Threat, is focused on helping states strengthen cybersecurity practices as they relate to state IT networks, health care, education, safety, energy, transportation, critical infrastructure, economic development and workforce.
