    1. Governor McAuliffe Vetoes Legislation Defunding Women’s Health Provider Planned Parenthood

      • What are the details of this announcement?
      • “Pursuant to Article V, Section 6, of the Constitution of Virginia, I veto House Bill 2264, which would prohibit the Virginia Department of Health from entering into contracts or providing funds to any entity that performs non-federally qualified abortions. This bill, aimed at Planned Parenthood, would harm tens of thousands of Virginians who rely on the health care services and programs provided by Planned Parenthood health centers, by denying them access to affordable care. Virginians, and particularly low-income Virginians, need more access to health care, not less. If we are going to build a new, more vibrant Virginia economy, we need to open doors to quality, affordable health care, not close them. Attempts to restrict women’s access to health care will impede the goal of making Virginia the best place to live, work, and run a business,” said Governor McAliffe.

      • What are the details of this announcement?
      • “Abuse of opioids continues to kill Virginians,” said Governor McAuliffe. “We recognize that addiction is a disease, not a moral failing, and our proposals for this General Assembly session focused on preventing addiction and providing treatment for those who suffer from it. While our overdose death statistics, sadly, continue to rise, each number represents a family that is suffering. We will use every tool we can get to continue this fight.”

      • What are the details of this announcement?
      • “As the Chair and Vice Chair of the National Governors Association First Spouses program, we are urging First Spouses across the US to take action to end childhood hunger in their states. We all agree that there is a significant problem, but YOU can be a part of the solution. We also urge our fellow citizens to speak out. Contact your elected officials about hunger and related programs in your state. Ask your school superintendent or principal about making breakfast part of the school day. Advocate for the kids in your community who don't have a voice.”
    4. Governor McAuliffe Dedicates Renovated Capitol Square Building in Honor of Civil Rights Pioneer Barbara Johns

      Take aways:

      • What are the details of this announcement?
      • “Barbara Johns didn’t simply lead her classmates in a protest of inequitable schools. She led a group of young people and an entire nation to realize that courage was blind to age and race, and that real change requires action,” said Governor McAuliffe. “The walkout she led kicked off an extraordinary chain of events that eventually invalidated the deception of ‘separate but equal.’ Having her name placed among the other giants in Virginia and American history who are celebrated on Capitol Square is a fitting tribute to her legacy.”
