World Cancer Day 2016


WHEREAS, every year on February 4, World Cancer Day unites the world’s population in the fight against cancer; and 

WHEREAS, World Cancer Day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness about the disease; and

WHEREAS, according to the American Cancer Society, in 2015, there were 1.65 million new cancer cases and almost 600,000 cancer deaths in the U.S., and by 2030, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimates that the global burden will grow to 21.7 million new cancer cases and 13 million cancer deaths; and

WHEREAS, World Cancer Day’s theme, We Can. I Can.,is intended to show how everyone – as a collective or as individuals – can work to reduce the global burden of cancer;  

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize February 4, 2016, as WORLD CANCER DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
