Virginia Wine Month


WHEREAS, Virginia is a wine destination unlike any other, with more than 3,500 acres of winery and vineyard locations, seven American Viticultural Areas, and more than two dozen wine trails; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia wine industry has grown from six wineries in 1979 to more than 285 wineries today, ranking fifth in the country in the number of wineries and is the fifth largest wine grape producer; and

WHEREAS, sales of Virginia wine continued the pattern of growth during fiscal year 2016 and reached a record level, increasing by almost six percent from fiscal year 2015; and

WHEREAS, Virginia wineries sold more than 556,500 cases of wine, or more than 6.6 million bottles, in fiscal year 2016; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia wine industry employs more than 4,700 people and contributes almost $750 million to the Virginia economy on an annual basis; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Wine Month is an opportunity to celebrate the Commonwealth’s rich wine heritage with business and community leaders working in the wine industry;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 2016 as VIRGINIA WINE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
