Virginia Private College Week 2016


WHEREAS, Virginia’s private colleges and universities strengthen the Commonwealth’s higher education system; and

WHEREAS, independent colleges and universities are centers of learning that help build the New Virginia Economy; and

WHEREAS, more than 135,000 students attend a private college in Virginia, and benefit from an array of academic programs, outstanding faculty, small classes, and excellent preparation for careers or further education; and

WHEREAS, by supporting 82 percent of undergraduates with financial aid and providing over $690 million through institutional grant aid to students, Virginia private colleges and universities help make higher education attainable for students of many backgrounds; and

WHEREAS, Virginia undergraduates attending an eligible private college or university in the state receive an annual Tuition Assistance Grant from the Commonwealth of $3,200; and

WHEREAS, the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia, founded in 1971, represents the interests of twenty-eight private institutions in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, during Virginia Private College Week, the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia invites high school students and their families to explore the educational opportunities available at twenty-four private colleges; and

WHEREAS, students who visit three or more participating institutions during Virginia Private College Week may apply for free to any three institutions that are members of the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize July 25th-30th, 2016, as VIRGINIA PRIVATE COLLEGE WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
