Virginia One Bag of Trash Challenge

WHEREAS, the One Bag of Trash Challenge is a month-long initiative by Keep Virginia Beautiful that encourages Virginians to pick up at least one bag full of litter in their community; and

WHEREAS, in 1953, Keep Virginia Beautiful was founded to address the increasing amounts of litter alongside roads and in public spaces throughout the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the mission of Keep Virginia Beautiful is to engage and unite Virginians to improve our natural and scenic environment, by linking volunteers with opportunities and information about five impact areas: Litter Prevention, Recycling, Waste Reduction, Beautification, and Education; and

WHEREAS, littered highways and public spaces have a negative impact on residents, businesses, and tourism in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the One Bag of Trash Challenge reminds Virginians of the measurable benefits of community clean-up efforts and that we must all pitch in to keep our Virginia beautiful;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 2016 as VIRGINIA ONE BAG OF TRASH CHALLENGE in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
