Virginia Future Farmers of America Day

WHEREAS, agriculture, Virginia's largest industry, contributes significantly to the overall economy of the state, generating $52 billion annually as well as 357,000 jobs in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the Future Farmers of America (FFA) Association had prepared generations of young Americans not only for careers in agriculture but for prominent roles in the civic life of communities across this nation; and

WHEREAS, each year we observe National FFA Week in honor of Virginia FFA chapters' contributions to the economic health and civic vitality of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the theme of this year's observance, "Ignite - FFA," is highly appropriate in view of the many past and current American leaders who are former FFA members; and

WHEREAS, it is especially fitting that Virginia, firmly rooted in the Jeffersonian belief that agrarian ideals are the foundation of a democratic society, should acknowledge and celebrate the importance of an organization that so clearly reflects and preserves those sentiments;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Governor Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize Wednesday, February 19, 2014, as VIRGINIA FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
