Virginia Dream the Big Dream Day 2016

WHEREAS, on any given day, there are an estimated 2.7 million children in America with at least one parent in prison or jail; and

WHEREAS, approximately 10 million children have experienced parental incarceration at some point in their lives; and

WHEREAS, children of incarcerated parents have the right to be safe, cared for, and supported; and

WHEREAS, children of incarcerated parents have the right not to be judged, blamed, or labeled because of their parent’s incarceration; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth and its community partners can help these children become ambassadors for change in their communities and help stop the cycle of incarceration;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize July 18, 2016, as VIRGINIA DREAM THE BIG DREAM DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
