Virginia College Application Week

WHEREAS, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), in conjunction with the American College Application Campaign, has designated the week beginning November 17, 2014, as Virginia College Application Week (VCAW); and

WHEREAS, the first VCAW was held in November 2012, resulting in over 3,000 college applications from 16 Virginia high schools; and

WHEREAS, more than 450 students took advantage of this tool during the first VCAW; and

WHEREAS, VCAW aims to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students pursuing a post-secondary education; and

WHEREAS, prior to the week, students are encouraged to prepare personal essays, build their resumes and collect information that is necessary for completing a college admission application; and

WHEREAS, during the week, students receive one-on-one assistance from school counselors, admissions officers and volunteers to complete online admission applications, with the goal of submitting at least one application to a two-year or four-year institution; and

WHEREAS, SCHEV and the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia coordinate with many of Virginia’s private and public universities and colleges to waive application fees for students with demonstrated financial need; and

WHEREAS, SCHEV will continue the expansion of the VCAW to new schools each year, with the hope of reaching more Virginia students seeking a path to higher education;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize November 17-21, 2014, as VIRGINIA COLLEGE APPLICATION WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
