USS Ranger Day


WHEREAS, the aircraft carrier, USS RANGER (CV 61/ CVA 61) served our country for 36 years, earning 13 battle stars in Vietnam and remaining in active combat operations longer than any other carrier in the Gulf War; and

WHEREAS, the USS RANGER played a crucial role in several humanitarian missions, including Operation Restore Hope; and

WHEREAS, the USS RANGER is the eighth RANGER to serve in the fleet built in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the USS RANGER’s fourth Commanding Officer, Captain Donald Gay, Jr., was a Virginia native; and

WHEREAS, USS RANGER day is an opportunity to honor the members of the Navy, Marine, and Air Force who served onboard;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize August 2, 2014, as USS RANGER DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
