United Nations Day


WHEREAS, October 24, 1945, marks the founding of the United Nations and is observed each year as United Nations Day; and

WHEREAS, the United Nations promotes peace and security, development, democracy, economic prosperity, global health and human rights around the world, and is vital now more than ever; and

WHEREAS, the effectiveness of the United Nations, depends on the participation of 193 member nations and millions of global citizens; and

WHEREAS, more than 80 countries have become sovereign nations through efforts by the United Nations; and

WHEREAS, the United Nations assists in efforts to lower child mortality rates in developing countries, analyzes viable solutions for climate change, and empowers women around the world; and

WHEREAS, the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., embark on a new partnership aiming to create global citizens and foster new audiences to better support the United Nations; and

WHEREAS, the theme for this year’s United Nations Day—“One Humanity, Shared Responsibility”—reminds Virginians of the responsibilities global citizens have to those whose voices are suppressed;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 24, 2016, as UNITED NATIONS DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
