Try Transit Week


WHEREAS, public transit has been shown to be an economically and environmentally wise choice by reducing our consumption of fuel; and

WHEREAS, public transit has been shown to help alleviate congestion by reducing the number of cars on highways; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to supporting the use of public transit options throughout Virginia based on the many benefits that transit can provide; and

WHEREAS, the newly opened Silver Line, the largest expansion of the existing Metrorail system in more than two decades, is a 23-mile extension with new tracks that extend from East Falls Church, through Tysons and Reston, and eventually to Washington Dulles International Airport; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) is devoted to improving the mobility of people and goods while expanding transportation choices in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, DRPT is the sponsor of Try Transit Week, an event designed to encourage Virginians to try available public transit options such as buses, passenger rails, or ferry service; and

WHEREAS, DRPT has established the website for Virginians to pledge to try transit and to locate their transit options; and

WHEREAS, Virginians are encouraged to participate in Try Transit Week and enjoy the benefits of environmentally and economically efficient modes of transportation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 15-19, 2014, as TRY TRANSIT WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
