Try Transit Week


WHEREAS, public transit helps alleviate congestion by reducing the number of cars on highways; and

WHEREAS, public transit can be an economically and environmentally wise choice by reducing our consumption of fuel; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to supporting the use of public transit options throughout Virginia based on the many benefits that transit can provide; and

WHEREAS,the federal grant awarded to the Commonwealth of Virginia for the Atlantic Gateway Project will allow for bus services to be expanded, additional commuter parking lots to be built, and 14 miles of new rail track to be constructed to increase capacity for passenger rail service; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Rail and Public Transportation is devoted to improving the mobility of people and goods while expanding transportation choices in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Try Transit Week encourages Virginians to try available public transit options such as buses, passenger rail, or ferry service; and

WHEREAS, Virginians are encouraged to participate in Try Transit Week and enjoy the benefits of environmentally and economically efficient modes of transportation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 19-23, 2016, as TRY TRANSIT WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
