Travel and Tourism Week 2016


WHEREAS, the first full week in May is recognized as National Travel and Tourism Week to promote the contributions of the tourism industry to our nation’s economic prosperity; and

WHEREAS, travel produces significant economic benefits in the United States, generating $2.1 trillion in economic output and supporting 15 million jobs; and

WHEREAS, travel and tourism are vital components of Virginia’s diverse economy, cornerstones of our vibrant quality of life, and catalysts for entrepreneurship, cultural enrichment, historic preservation, community revitalization, and economic growth; and

WHEREAS, the travel and tourism industry consistently ranks among the top five largest private employers in the Commonwealth, generating $22.4 billion in visitor spending, supporting 217,000 jobs, and providing $1.5 billion in state and local taxes; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Tourism Authority was established by the General Assembly of Virginia on July 1, 1999, to stimulate the tourism industry in the Commonwealth, support the development of local tourism marketing programs, and increase the prosperity and welfare of the people of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, in an effort to market the Commonwealth as a premier travel destination, the Virginia Tourism Authority works tirelessly in partnership with localities, destination marketing organizations, businesses, and non-profit institutions to extend the appeal, reach, and impact of the “Virginia is for Lovers” brand; and

WHEREAS, travel and tourism professionals are devoted ambassadors for Virginia whose commitment to economic opportunity, community development, hospitality and progress exemplify the highest ideals and best traditions of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize May 1-7, 2016, as TRAVEL AND TOURISM WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
