Summer Food Service Program Day


WHEREAS, summer can be a particularly difficult time for children who depend on school meals as their primary source of nutrition during the school year; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Health administers the USDA Summer Food Service Program, which ensures that children continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer at community centers, libraries, schools, and faith-based organizations; and 

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Education plays a significant role in helping schools provide meals to children in need during the summer; and

WHEREAS, it is critical to raise public awareness of child hunger and nutrition, the necessity of the Summer Food Service Program, and the importance of increased access to the various meal sites in communities throughout Virginia;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize June 5, 2014, as the inaugural SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
