Small Business Saturday

WHEREAS, according to the Small Business Administration, there are more than 705,000 small businesses in Virginia, representing 99.5% of all employers; and

WHEREAS, Virginia small businesses employ more than 1.5 million workers, and are critical to the growth of the New Virginia Economy as they continue to drive significant job creation and innovation; and

WHEREAS, Executive Order 20 expands contracting opportunities to small, women-owned, and minority-owned (SWaM) businesses across the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, in 2010, Small Business Saturday was started to support small businesses across the country by attracting new customers in November and December, which account for approximately 40% of annual revenue for U.S. retailers; and

WHEREAS, consumers spent an estimated $15.4 billion at independent businesses nationwide on Small Business Saturday in 2016; and

WHEREAS, I encourage all Virginians to participate in Small Business Saturday by shopping at local stores, businesses, restaurants, and other independent merchants in communities across the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize November 25, 2017, as SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
