Small and Minority-Owned Business Appreciation Month 2016


WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia recognizes small and minority-owned businesses are essential for strengthening and sustaining the economic well-being of all our citizens; and

WHEREAS, these Virginia businesses operate in diverse industries including advanced manufacturing, energy, life sciences, tourism, agribusiness and information technology; and

WHEREAS, the promotion and advancement of small and minority-owned businesses is a top priority as they are catalysts for job creation, the bedrock of independence and community success; and

WHEREAS, entrepreneurship is a major component of the community wealth building movement and provides opportunities to create multigenerational wealth; and

WHEREAS, since the beginning of the McAuliffe Administration, the Virginia Small Business Financing Authority (VSBFA), a division of the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity (DSBSD), has partnered with Virginia’s banks and equity providers to extend over $46 million in loans and equity investments to Virginia businesses, and these businesses have created and retained 1,763 jobs; and

WHEREAS, Executive Order 20 expands contracting opportunities for small, women-owned, and minority-owned (SWaM) businesses in the Commonwealth and sets a  higher bar for SWaM contracting across state government; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to supporting and retaining local, state, and regional small and minority-owned businesses;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize May 2016 as SMALL AND MINORITY OWNED BUSINESS APPRECIATION MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
