Silver Jubilee Anniversary of Dr. Melvin O. Marriner


WHEREAS, 2014 marks the Silver Jubilee Anniversary of Senior Pastor Dr. Melvin O. Marriner, who has inspired Grove Church since 1989, and who leads the congregation as it has added new worship and educational facilities and expanded from 300 members in 1989 to more than 4,000 today; and

WHEREAS, Grove Church also marks its 174th anniversary of service to the Portsmouth community and is recognized as one of the oldest and largest African American churches in Hampton Roads; and

WHEREAS, under his leadership, Dr. Marriner has launched several community-based initiatives to support children and schools, expand church ministry, and contribute to public health education; and

WHEREAS, the Grove Church congregation holds the distinction of being the first and only faith-based organization in the United States to serve as a flagship sponsor for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and has raised more than $125,000 in support of breast cancer research and treatment, and more than $100,000 for the Portsmouth Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, in September 2001, Dr. Marriner and Grove Church founded the Marriner Christian Academy: Early Learning and Family Education Center, which provides essential pre-kindergarten education and care to children ages two to five; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Marriner serves the Hampton Roads community as Chaplain for the Portsmouth Fire Department and Chief Executive Officer of the Visions of Truth Community Development Corporation, and serves on several boards and committees that promote economic development, healthcare, and community service throughout Virginia;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize the SILVER JUBILEE ANNIVERSARY OF DR. MELVIN O. MARRINER in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all citizens.
