School Psychology Week


WHEREAS, all children should have access to an education that meets their needs; and

WHEREAS, sound psychological principles are integral to instruction and learning, social and emotional development, and supporting culturally-diverse student populations; and

WHEREAS, children’s mental health and resilience are directly linked to their learning and development; and

WHEREAS, schools provide an opportunity to promote good mental health of children because of the positive nature of the learning environment and the availability of trained, caring adults; and

WHEREAS, school psychologists are specially trained to deliver mental health services and academic support, both of which promote resilience, competence, and wellness in children; and

WHEREAS, school psychologists facilitate collaboration between parents and educators to identify and reduce risk factors, promote protective factors, create effective, caring schools, increase access to resources for underserved communities, and implement research-driven prevention and intervention strategies; and

WHEREAS, Virginians recognize the vital role that school psychologists play in the personal and academic development of our children;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize November 10-14, 2014, as SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY WEEK in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all citizens.
