Richmond 2015 UCI Road World Championships


WHEREAS, Richmond, Virginia, is proud to host cyclists and sporting enthusiasts from all over the world September 19-27, 2015, as the 2015 Road World Championships mark the return of cycling’s pinnacle event to the United States for the first time in nearly 30 years; and

WHEREAS, Richmond was chosen as the first American host since 1986, on September 21, 2011, after a competitive bid process similar to the Olympics; and

WHEREAS, since September 21, 2011, the city of Richmond has prepared for the race, and is anticipating a $158 million economic impact; and

WHEREAS, the World Championships is a nine-day event featuring 12 Champions races for elite men and women that will take place in the greater Richmond area surrounding the historical downtown Capitol; and

WHEREAS, a projected 450,000 spectators will attend the event to watch more than 1,000 cyclists from more than 70 countries compete for medals in their race division; and  

WHEREAS, televised coverage of the event is anticipated to draw more than 300 million viewers across expanded television networks; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the bike races, spectators and visitors can enjoy festivals, concerts, expos and other entertainment including a wide range of wonderful area attractions Richmond and the greater Virginia region have to offer;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 19-27, 2015, as the RICHMOND 2015 UCI ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
