Professional Social Workers' Month


WHEREAS, through compassion, advocacy and empowerment, social work professionals have made significant impacts on the lives of the people they serve; and

WHEREAS, the mission of social work is to enable people to develop their full potential, and enrich their lives; and

WHEREAS, social workers understand and appreciate the worth and dignity of all individuals and families within our communities; and

WHEREAS, passion for human rights and social justice motivates social workers to advocate on behalf of vulnerable populations; and

WHEREAS, there are more than 600,000 highly trained social workers in the United States and more than 5,000 licensed social workers in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, social workers offer guidance and assistance to thousands of Virginians every day, empowering them to build brighter futures for themselves and their families; and

WHEREAS, social workers believe in the strength, courage, and resilience of the human spirit, and strive to help people lead healthier and more productive lives; and

WHEREAS, professional social workers provide services to Virginia’s schools, hospitals, community organizations, public and private agencies, and higher educational institutions, as well as the military and veterans centers;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize March 2016 as PROFESSIONAL SOCIAL WORKERS’ MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
