Pet Adoption Day


WHEREAS, pet adoption helps Virginians find loving companions and helps animals find loving homes; and

WHEREAS, more than seven million animals enter shelters each year, and more than two million shelter animals are euthanized each year; and

WHEREAS, only 35 percent of dogs and 37 percent of cats in shelters get adopted, and only 29 percent of all pet dogs and cats were adopted from shelters; and

WHEREAS, there is a need to increase public awareness about the need for pet adoption and to encourage all Americans to consider getting their next best friend and companion through adoption; and

WHEREAS, adoption protects animals from injury, disease, abuse, and starvation; and

WHEREAS, Pet Adoption Day will help inspire Virginians to adopt pets and provide their animals with quality care;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize August 25, 2016, as PET ADOPTION DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
