Nurse Practitioners Week

WHEREAS, Nurse Practitioners are Masters or Doctorate educated Advanced Practice Registered Nurses; and

WHEREAS, Nurse Practitioners provide quality health care to citizens throughout the Commonwealth by diagnosing and treating a full range of health problems and providing a unique approach that stresses health promotion, care, and cure; and

WHEREAS, Nurse Practitioners advocate for the improvement of health and access to care for all Virginians by practicing in private and community centers, hospitals, academic centers, long-term care facilities, VA and military hospitals, free clinics, and convenient or urgent care clinics; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is home to more than 8,000 practicing Nurse Practitioners; and 

WHEREAS, more than 18 percent of Nurse Practitioners practice in rural settings with populations of less than 25,000; and

WHEREAS, Nurse Practitioners are supported by the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners, an organization that facilitates the advancement and professional growth of Nurse Practitioners and increases awareness of the critical role of Nurse Practitioners in our healthcare system; and

WHEREAS, Nurse Practitioners are charting a new course with the passage of House Bill 346, developed with the help of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners and the Medical Society of Virginia, which creates collaborative relationships between physicians and Nurse Practitioners and encourages the use of technologies that improve access to care; and

WHEREAS, Nurse Practitioners Week is an opportunity to thank the thousands of Nurse Practitioners in the Commonwealth and around the world who devote their lives to improving the health of others;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize November 9-15, 2014, as NURSE PRACTITIONERS WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
