National Truck Driver Appreciation Week


WHEREAS, the trucking industry plays a critical role in Virginia’s economy by transporting 88 percent of the manufactured freight tonnage that moves in and out of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Virginians rely on the dedicated service of professional truck drivers to safely and securely deliver life’s essential needs to every community, school, hospital, and business in the Commonwealth and nation; and

WHEREAS, professional truck drivers of the Commonwealth of Virginia safely deliver more than 213,000tons of freight each day; and

WHEREAS, more than 150,000 Virginians earn their living through employment in the trucking industry, including the more than 55,000 who work as professional tractor-trailer and delivery drivers; and

WHEREAS, more than 3.5 million hard-working men and women drive trucks over 279 billion miles to deliver 70.1 percent of total U.S. freight tonnage each year; and

WHEREAS, the trucking industry has made strides to lower hazardousemissions, by utilizing technological advances in their trucks; and

WHEREAS, during challenging times and natural disasters, professional truck drivers are among the first to respond, bringing critical goods to aid in recovery; and

WHEREAS, the people of the Commonwealth appreciate the commitment of each truck driver and his and her hard work to help build a new Virginia economy;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 11-17, 2016, as NATIONAL TRUCK DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
