National Suicide Prevention Week


WHEREAS, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for Americans, with a person dying by suicide every 12.8 minutes; and

WHEREAS, for every reported death by suicide, there are approximately 12 documented attempts of self-harm; and

WHEREAS, public awareness of the warnings signs and the networks available for at-risk individuals, are essential to continue lowering the rates of suicide in the country and the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, community organizations and grass-roots support are essential to continuing the fight against suicide and the loss of young lives; and

WHEREAS, reducing the stigma by discussing suicide and increasing the awareness of available resources for those suffering from suicidal thoughts is important to maintaining the health and happiness of Virginians;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 7-13, 2015, as NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
