National Family Literacy Day


WHEREAS, it is important that all families in Virginia have access to literacy programs; and

WHEREAS, literacy is crucial to providing a framework for learning, as it plays a fundamental role in social, cultural, and economic prosperity; and  

WHERAS, reading and writing stimulate intellectual growth and self-expression and are essential to the education and well-being of all people; and

WHEREAS, librarians, families, parents, and teachers help showcase the importance of literacy throughout the year by hosting readathons, book drives, reading fairs, and more; and

WHEREAS, November 1, 2014, marks 20 years of National Family Literacy Day; and

WHEREAS, on National Family Literacy Day, thousands of literacy programs will hold readings, workshops, and family activities at libraries and community centers to encourage active literacy year round;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize November 1, 2014, as NATIONAL FAMILY LITERACY DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
